Junior group

Ages 3–4 · The joy of discovering together.

An age-appropriate beginning

At ages 3–4, conversations, imaginative play and interest in other people offer increasing opportunities for learning. Children begin to join shared games and express their ideas more clearly. Age-appropriate experiences build on their curiosity and preserve the joy of trying.

Evidence-informed educational guidance for parents. The examples below can inspire activities; discuss the group's specific plans with the teacher.

Supporting your child's development

Language, stories and questions

At age 3, back-and-forth conversations and questions such as “who?”, “where?” and “why?” are useful milestones to observe. A picture book can start a conversation about a character's actions. Adults listen, add words and invite children to tell the story. Repeating a familiar story gives children opportunities to anticipate and participate.

Emotions and group life

Joining other children's games develops gradually. Brief rules explained through gestures and examples help more than long instructions. During a disagreement, adults support children in saying what they want and finding a solution. Naming feelings and acknowledging successful attempts builds confidence and relationships.

Thinking, imagination and initiative

Pretend shops and family games let children choose roles and use objects imaginatively. They can decide what they need and what happens next. Adults provide materials and suitable questions without turning every moment into a lesson. Choosing between a few possibilities allows children to contribute to their own learning.

Skilful hands and everyday habits

Drawing shapes from a model, using cutlery and helping with dressing are examples of developing abilities. Building and drawing materials can be adapted to how a child uses them. Trying, enjoying the activity and making personal progress matter more than perfectly copying a model.

Learning comes to life through play

Examples that can be adapted to children's interests and abilities, using age-appropriate materials and adult supervision.

A story in pictures

The child chooses a picture and describes what is happening. An adult can expand the idea into a richer sentence and write down the story to read again.

Let's pretend…

In simple role play, children choose characters and objects. They practise expression, imagining a situation and coordinating with a partner.

Choosing and trying

A building task can have several solutions. Different materials let children test their own ideas.

In partnership with families

Make time for conversations in which your child can respond. When a difficulty arises, help them describe it and try a solution. Explain a few clear rules and show what they can do. Conversations with the teacher can start with favourite games and how your child relates to others.

Milestones describe developmental trends, not admission requirements. If you notice loss of skills or have concerns, speak with your child's doctor.
